The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ

Vision / Mission / Goals

Our mission is inspired by the work and example of the late New Zealander and eye surgeon Professor Fred Hollows. The FHF works throughout the developing world to treat and prevent unnecessary, avoidable blindness. Through reducing the cost of cataract operations to as little as $25, we have helped to restore the sight of more than 1,000,000 people worldwide.

In NZ our primary focus is in the developing countries of the Pacific Region. All our work focuses on the prevention of blindness, and restoring sight for people who are blind from cataracts or other disorders.

Our goal is ensure our work is sustainable and that the countries in which we work are empowered and supported.

What we currently do in the way of marketing

We have done some TV advertising in the past. We also have a 2x year appeal letter and a 2 x year news letter. We have just approached 500 schools accross NZ to take up a Fred Hollows fundraiser schools day (but that was last week so no news from that as yet)

Message to Students / how you can help us

Although we are an International organisation, our NZ office has only 6 staff (three fulltime) so we don't really have time to look into any new media, marketing and awareness raising strategies. But we'd love to find out more and learn from people in the know!

We are well known among the older generation in NZ as Fred Hollows was highly revered for his humanitarian work . However, today's youth have little idea about Fred Hollows and his resulting NPO, The Fred Hollows Foundation; this is the generation we need to target if our organisation is to survive in the future.

We need young, creative, innovative minds who know how generation Y works and can help us get into the 21st century media market to raise awareness of our organisation to ensure our work can continue. We also want to get our founder-Fred Hollows back into the minds of New Zealanders- Fred was a Kiwi- yet it was Australia that celebrated him as 'Australian of the year'! whilst many Kiwis hardly know who he is. As one of NZ's greats, it's important that he is remembered.

We are an exciting organisation and the work we do is at the leading edge of development; aswell as restoring sight and so enabling people to reenter the workforce, our programmes are also set up to be fully sustainable and adaptable to the infrastrucure of the local communities; through restoring sight and providing jobs and training opportunities we are supporting the countries' economies. The FHFNZ is particularly working towards improving the economies of the Pacific region, Timor-Leste and PNG. (The foundation also works in Australia, Nepal, Cambodia, Africa amongst others). We believe it's important that more people understand and are aware of our work, and that they remember NZ's unsung Kiwi hero Fred Hollows, who started this global revolutuion.

We need your help to do it!! So please check out our website, give us a call, come in and see us...whatever suits. We'd love to get involved with some young, exciting and digital media savvie minds who can help us get our message out there!! And it would be a great opportunity for you to work with an exciting and supportive NPO.
