Vision / Mission / Goals

YouthLaw's shared vision is to promote, protect and uphold the legal rights of children and young people in Aotearoa/New Zealand, through the provision of a free service that; helps people with their problems, empowers them with information, and; advocates for them at a national level. YouthLaw will be guided by the following principles;
  • The provision of a free and confidential service to children and young people who would be unable to access services otherwise.
  • The provision of youth friendly legal resources to educate children and young people about their rights, and encourage self-reliance in solving legal problems.
  • The duty to act on the instructions of children and young people who are our clients.
  • The responsibility to remain independent in order to advocate effectively for children and young people.
  • The promotion of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and its incorporation into NZ legislation and policy.
  • The protection of the rights of Tangata Whenua under Te Tiriti o Waitangi, as well as those of other minority groups.
  • The development and maintenance of effective relationships with relevant community groups/organisations, statutory agencies and iwi/hapu
  • The fostering of whanaungatanga amongst staff by operating as a non-hierarchical collective, which makes decisions by consensus

What we currently do in the way of marketing

We don't do any marketing or advertising as mentioned above. Occassionally we provide a small advert toa community newspaper howeveer we haev now stopped doing this as it is expensive and does not suit our needs. Most our advertising comes thorugh word of mouth and the provision of resources to children adn young people at yoth event such as Armageddon, Careers Expo's, PolyFest and Matatini

Message to Students

How you can help us!!!
  1. Website
  2. Online Training
  3. Text messaging
YouthLaw is the only national law centre whose community is demographic rather than geographic. Our community is all children and young people under 25 anywhere in Aotearoa/NZ.
So our community is your community!!

WEBSITE - We have a website with heaps of legal information on it but we feel we could make it more engaging for our visitors. A lot of visitors to our site work with children and young people so the website is for a broader audience than just ygen and includes many teachers, counsellors, youth workers, parents, govt agencies etc. Much of the onsite info is text heavy due to the nature of law we are trying to impart. It must be accurate and it is sometimes detailed to minimize misunderstanding about the law. Lets face it the law is pretty boring; but it is also incredibly useful and knowing your rights can be a great tool for ensuring you are getting a fair deal at school, on the road, with the police, within your family and at work. We have a number of books to turn into online resources, the books need to be broken down into manageable size slices, add graphics and make them a useful, educational and engaging eresource.

ONLINE TRAINING - YouthLaw has just been successful in securing funding for a major project to provide practical advocacy training for youth workers in an online format. The project has a number of elements to it including website design of a members section for trainers and youth workers. This will include; • a members area for sharing of ideas, best practice and discussion. • a resource section containing all the course materials, powerpoints, videos for trainers and trainees • abililty to provide the training through webinars for those who cannot access training at other regional venues Apart from all this we also want to make it simple, fun and interactive and engaging for users. Want the world…………………..basically yes!!

TEXT CAPABILITY - We are a small organization (6FTE & 1 PTE), we don’t have an 0800 number as we would not be able to cope with the large influx of calls that may eventuate. Most of our callers are young people and the majority of all our callers use a mobile phone. We would like to have a capacity through our website to receive text messages. For basic legal info an instant message using key word identifiers could be returned with a web link and/or some basic info. Legal advice could not be provided by text so we would need to be able to contact callers who require more assistance. There a number of ways we could use mobile technology;
  • Develop a simple mobile game about legal rights
  • Instant pop vox on current issues
  • Monthly tips on legal rights for txt members
  • Receive instant $2 donations
  • Create ring tone
Anyway there are some ideas and options now it is up to you to pick it up and go for it. Thanks for the opportunity.
